There are lots of fun things You can do
in the great outdoors!

Do you love the thought of going outside but just don't know what to do when you get there? Here are a few ideas to help you get involved in nature.

Watch the sunrise- How does waiting for the sun to pop up above the horizon make you feel? How many colors did you see?

Take photos - Describe yourself by taking 10 pictures in nature. Trade pictures with friends and try to figure out the meaning of each other's photos.

Print the scenes captured when you hang out at the lake or anywhere else in nature. Place the pics in cute frames to remember and share the experience with others.

Keep a journal - Hang a hammock between two trees, crawl in, and just listen. Make a list of the different sounds you hear. What is creating each specific sound? How do the noises make you feel?

Create nature-inspired art - While viewing the beauty surrounding you let it sink deep into your heart and soul.

Get plenty of fresh air and sunshine - Make your health a priority, take a walk and get plenty of exercise. Invite friends to go with you and help others to reach their goals as well.

Benefits You Gain When Going Outdoors

According to a report from the Outdoor Foundation, nearly half of the almost 330 million U.S. population did not take time to go outside and get some exercise in 2018.

Kids went outside on 15% fewer excursions in 2018 than in 2012 which is alarming. Their involvement and enjoying nature as young people are strong indicators of future activity.

When you are actively involved outside as a child, you are twice as likely to be active outside as an adult.

Research findings from the National Parks Traveler, regularly point to the benefits of getting out into the fresh air and exercising. A team of researchers in Australia placed a dollar figure on mental health benefits you gain from being in nature. The study concluded national parks around the world provide $6 trillion in benefits to you when you take the time to participate and enjoy.

Fun Activities in Nature for You

Are you a connoisseur of the outdoors? Do you love spending every minute you can outside in nature?

Camp out - Set a tent, sleep in your backyard, or locate a state park near you.

Sit around a campfire - Spend precious time with family and friends. Take turns telling each other your favorite things about one another. Tell the people you love why you love them.

Hike a new trail with a friend - Journal the incredible things you witness in nature.

Plant a small garden -  Grow your own beautiful flowers and quality vegetables. Be proud of the healthy food you grow for your family to eat.

Plant Flowers -  Brighten the outside of your home and improve curb appeal by planting vibrant flowers. Enjoy the sweet smell and beautiful colors every time you walk by.

Encourage Your Kids to Go Outside and Play Games

There are many no-tech games kids can play outside. Games can be played with one friend, by yourself, or with a group of neighborhood friends. Use your imagination, make up your own rules, and have fun!

Tag - A person within a group volunteers to be "it". This person then chases the others around, trying to tag someone with their hand. The first person tagged is the new "it".

Hide and Seek - One person is chosen and counts to 100 or whatever number is agreed upon. After reaching that number, they find each person from the group that is hiding.

Musical Chairs - Place chairs in a line back-to-back using one chair less than the number of people in the group playing. One person needs to oversee the music. The players begin walking around the chairs when the music begins. Players must sit in a chair as soon as possible when the music stops. Whoever doesn’t have a chair is out and removes a chair out of the lineup with them. The game continues until the person in the final chair is the winner.

Simon Says - One person is Simon and begins each sentence with “Simon says,” then tells the group an action to perform. Each person in the group must complete the action. If Simon commands an action without stating, “Simon says,” anyone that performs the action is out. The winner is Simon for the next round.

Kickball - Pick teams and determine your own rules for the game.

Hopscotch - Using sidewalk chalk, draw a hopscotch grid. Number the squares from one to nine. Choose a medium-sized rock and toss it into Square 1. Follow the hopscotch pattern and hop over the rock with a single foot or both feet to the end. Turn around and hop back stopping on Square 2. Balancing on one foot, pick up the rock in Square 1 and hop over Square 1 to the start. Continue this pattern with Square 2. And so on. If you toss your rock and miss the correct square, your turn is over. This game can be played with any number of people, but only one person can go at a time.
