What Appears Empty May Not Be Safe

Life in the desert is not easy.

Water is scarce. Temperatures can soar to unbearable heights during the day and plummet at night. Every plant and animal that survives there has adapted to one of Earth’s harshest environments. At first glance, the greatest danger seems obvious—the lack of water.

Ironically, that’s not true.

The deadliest threat in the desert is often too much water.

When rain falls miles away in the mountains or across dry terrain, floodwaters can rush through normally empty washes with astonishing speed. A dry creek bed that looked perfectly safe just moments earlier can become a raging river. People who underestimate the danger often find themselves trapped with little warning. Flash floods claim more lives in desert regions than many other natural hazards.

A dry wash in the desert can appear harmless. Travelers may walk through it without giving it a second thought. But experienced desert dwellers know to respect it because they understand what it can become.

Desert residents learn to respect weather forecasts. They don’t wait until floodwaters are rushing toward them before deciding what to do.

“God is our protection and our strength. He always helps in times of trouble.” Psalm 46:1

Living life well requires preparation that happens before the crisis. Stay close to Christ. Walk daily with Him. Keep your heart anchored in His truth.

– Prepare by spending time in God’s Word.

– Prepare through consistent prayer.

– Prepare by remaining connected to other believers.

– Prepare by obeying God in the ordinary moments of life.

Those who build their lives on God’s Word need not be overcome. When the unexpected floods of life come, and they will, you won’t simply survive—you will stand on a firm foundation and discover that God has been your refuge all along.
