Out of Your Box
My farmer husband and I traveled to London and visited Paris last week. This was the first time in the UK for both of us. The UK has its own way of doing things. I think it’s good to get out of your box now and then, try something new. A few differences that I noticed living in the UK vs. America are listed below.
– Breakfast at the hotel was a big event; there was always a large crowd. The same traditional breakfast items were served every day, which included: sausage links, ham cut into strips that tasted like bacon, scrambled eggs, spring vegetable rolls, beans, a full salad bar, many small pastries, toast, and small pancakes. The food serving size is much smaller than in the US.
– Elevators are referred to as Lifts in the UK. (I really like that name!)
– Restrooms are referred to as Toilets. I overheard a 20-something gal in a restaurant asking her friend if she needed a toilet as they were getting ready to leave, and it made the American in me kind of cringe. I must admit, I couldn’t say it, I still ask for the restroom. I just couldn’t bring myself to ask for the toilet.
– Driving in the UK is insane! The roads are barely wide enough for the small cars they drive down them. It might be a two-lane road, but one has to stop wherever they can pull over to let the other car pass. There are no street signs. At some of the intersections, there might be a street sign on a building. The street name seems to change every few blocks.
– We rented a car and drove through the countryside. The dirt roads we were on really did not even count as roads. We saw a sign that said, “Be careful driving, 5 people die each day on UK roads.” Honestly, I can’t believe it’s not more than that!
– The architecture in London and Paris is beautiful and amazing. The old buildings there were built to stand the test of time, and they have very well.
London is a completely different way of living than we are used to, and it was fun to experience. Wide open spaces are what we see, and there is no space between buildings in London. A little too close for my comfort, but it was a great place to visit.
