Honest Thoughts on an Empty Nest
I had a conversation with someone the other day whose son had just graduated from high school and was explaining how sad they were that they were going to be empty nesters. Then she asked if it was hard for my husband and me when our kids left the house.
I just smiled and gave an honest answer.
Between us, my husband and I have nine kids. When they were all in the house, I would go grocery shopping 3 times a week. Our household drank 8 to 9 gallons of milk a week. When we had an empty nest, my husband and I were more like Woo Hoo!!
I could tell that my answer was kind of shocking to her.
I have always told our kids that our job as parents is to teach them to be independent and stand on their own two feet. My prayer is that not only can they take care of themselves, but also be responsible enough to help others take care of themselves as well.
Life is a lot like gardening and works in seasons. There is a season for sowing. A season for planting. A season for reaping.
When our kids leave the house, and the nest is empty, our lives begin a new season. What does the next season look like for you? What are you sowing?
If you want stronger relationships, sow encouragement.
If you want better health, sow discipline.
Who are you surrounding yourself with? People influence us, and we influence people. Surround yourself with people who will build you up and help you grow.
Be proud of your kids, and make time for them when they visit.
Stay intentional, stay in motion, and keep planting good seeds.
Have a blessed week.
