Paying Homage to Those Who Don’t Come Home
While Memorial Day weekend is often associated with barbeques, travel, and the unofficial start of summer, its core purpose remains a day of reflection and remembrance. Put another way, Memorial Day is “the day we pay homage to all those who didn’t come home.”
Observing the holiday respectfully includes visiting cemeteries and memorials, placing flags, flowers, and wreaths on graves, lowering the flag to half-staff, taking a moment of silence to honor the fallen, and participating in parades and ceremonies.
I will admit that I have never started the tradition of placing flowers on the graves of loved ones. My parents always did, and as a kid, I remember going around to all the graves with them. However, it was not a tradition that I passed on to my kids.
Truthfully, it is a wonderful tradition that maybe I should start.
In fact, we would not have the many rights we have now without those who bravely fought for our nation.
To every veteran, thank you for your service!
Have a blessed week.
Debbie
