Consider the Weight of Your Words
Cheers!
What is the best advice you received this week?
We were at a science museum for kids with our granddaughters. There was much to see and touch, so the group of adults discussed keeping a reasonable pace.
Our three-year-old granddaughter was emerging from a castle exhibit. As she was coming down a spiral staircase, her mother exclaimed, “Come on, Hadlee, we need to keep moving.” Hadlee’s direct reply from the top of the staircase was, “Just wait a minute, I’m trying to be careful coming down these stairs.”
This profound statement pretty much put the adults in their place.
We were watching her painstakingly come down the stairs, yet the message we sent to her sounded as if we wanted her to rush. Even though we wanted her to take her time, that wasn’t the message sent.
She heard us loud and clear, and she was totally right. The three-year-old had more wisdom in her statement than the adults did.
It made me think more about choosing my words carefully, instead of just barking a command. Our words can carry much weight.
Think about choosing your words carefully this week. I know I will!
Blessings,
Debbie
