London Book Fair

This week, my farmer husband and I attended the London Book Fair, the world’s 2nd-largest book fair. We were invited to come and hold an author book signing for Believe In What You See.

I had foot surgery 8 weeks ago. The surgical site has healed nicely, but the nerve blocker used during surgery hasn’t been my friend. I still cannot feel part of my foot, so hobbling around London was a constant challenge.

The book fair was held in a huge building, crammed with book-industry booths representing every country you could imagine. When we arrived, I sat on a bench while my husband scouted the place out, found the booth we were part of, and the most direct route for me to slowly make my way before the event was open to the public.

Thousands of books were represented by publishers worldwide at the book fair. Who knew that all this went on there? Did you know that 4 million books are published each year?

For almost two hours, I chatted and signed books for the people who brought in scouts assigned to the booth. Each person had a different reason for being there. There was a publisher from Brazil looking for books about God, a printer that worked to make books accessible to read “Large Print”, and someone videotaping for National Geographic.

I only speak slow English, but I could make out most of the main parts of the stories each person shared. It was an honor to speak with each of them.

It made me think of a song I learned as a child. “He’s got the whole world in His hand. He’s got the whole world in His hand. He’s got the whole wide world in His hand. He’s got the whole world in His hand.”

I am happy to say that the song is still so very true today.
