Beside My Farmer, Blog

Being Flexible with Time

I rode with my farmer husband on a quick trip to Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota in the semi. We left Sunday afternoon around 2:00 pm and were back home by Monday at 8:00 pm.

Our anniversary is a couple of weeks away, so my sweet husband surprised me by booking a room at one of my favorite waterfront hotels in Sioux City. We enjoyed a lovely meal at their beautiful restaurant. I thought it was very thoughtful of him to celebrate early so that he wouldn’t forget.

When married to a farmer, you learn to be pretty laid back. Changes in the schedule are common. Your livelihood depends on working hand in hand with God and the weather, neither of which you get to control.

How do you feel about celebrating holidays? Do you feel like the holiday must be celebrated on the day for it to count, or can it be celebrated somewhere in the same month?

We celebrated Christmas with my parents the day after Christmas for many years. When all of us kids began getting married, it was easier to just schedule the day after Christmas to get everyone together. That has kinda set the tone for me.

My husband and I have 9 kids between us. Three are married, and we now have three granddaughters. If we can all land on a date to get together, we’ll take it!

When it comes down to it, does the actual date matter, or is it the idea of recognizing the event?

Slowing down to spend quality time with family and friends is what is most important. They are your people; cherish time spent with them.

Have a blessed week, planning some quality time with family.
